Our people: Kyal Hunter

Now taking on his most important role, as a father to son Spencer, Evolution Mining Manager Kyal Hunter shares his experience of Evolution’s paid parental leave entitlements.

Evolution’s parental leave policy has made a positive difference for Kyal Hunter, both at home and deep inside Cowal Gold Operation’s open pit where the Mining Manager and father has worked since 2020.

Recently Kyal, took the opportunity to take three months paid parental leave to be Spencer’s primary carer and full time Dad, when his wife Tegan returned to work.

A highlight of your career

“It was great for me to take three months parental leave after Tegan took nine months leave. It allowed her to return to her regular FIFO roster with peace of mind as I was at home with Spencer. Three months with me at home with Spencer every day, maintaining his routines, definitely took away a lot of stress with our family. As primary carer for the first time, my connection with Spencer grew, I was totally exposed to the hidden workload, all the trials and tribulations of domestic life with a newborn.”

When he returned to manage Cowal’s open pit, Kyal saw the positive impacts of his parental leave flow throughout Evolution’s wider family.

“All of my team were really supportive of me taking parental leave and would regularly check in to see how things were going. I actively encourage anyone who is in the position to take paid parental leave to do so as it’s a special time to bond with their family.”
